Choosing your Subjects
All students are asked to choose three subjects to study in Year 12. We know that making the right choice can be very difficult and some students struggle to settle on their final three subjects. To help you with your choice we suggest you consider the following:
What do you want to do after the sixth form? If you are looking to continue your studies at university, you may already have a particular course in mind. Start researching the entry requirements early so you know which subjects to choose at Advanced Level.
What are your strengths? You may decide to continue certain subjects at Advanced Level if you have shown a particular strength in those subjects at GCSE.
What do you enjoy? Advanced level study requires a lot of independent learning, wider reading and home study. It may be best to choose subjects you know you will enjoy as you will be spending a lot of time working on them!
We constantly review the range of subjects that we offer so that we can best meet the needs of our students. We cannot always guarantee that all subjects will run each year – this will depend on how many students choose each subject.
Entry Requirements for Level 3 qualifications
To study Level 3 qualifications at The Robert Napier Sixth Form, students need to obtain 5 GCSEs at grade 4-9 including English and Maths. For some Advanced Level subjects it is essential that you have studied and passed the subject at GCSE, e.g. Geography. Finally, some subjects required higher subject specific grades. For example Mathematics requires a Level 6 at GCSE to be studied at A-level.
In an increasingly competitive world of work it has become more vital than ever that students leave education with good skills in English and Maths. In fact, you will now find that many universities and employers will ask for a grade 4 in English and Maths as a basic requirement. If you have not been successful in achieving a grade 4 in either of these subjects at GCSE, we will provide catch-up lessons and excellent academic support to enable you to gain these qualifications before the end of your time in the sixth form.
